KENTWOOD, MI — To some, the dandelion represents the brightest enemy of a perfectly manicured lawn.

And while those diligent folks run for the weed killer at the first glimpse of yellow, I run for my camera and let the dandelions live — at least until my daughters come out and pick them.

I am an appreciative recipient of dandelions picked by children. I learned this skill from my mom, who these days graciously receives handpicked weeds from her grandchildren. It’s a pretty lovely tradition for those of us inclined to approach lawn maintenance with more whimsy than chemicals.

The good news is the lovers and haters don’t have to duke out the merits of this resilient weed, thanks to Kentwood artist Roland Lasher, who has figured out a way to create a lovely likeness of the dandelion — and a variety of flowers — that will never wilt or upset the neighbors. (more…)
